A Lifelong Commitment to Transformative Care
When you meet Dr. Paul Kloostra, you immediately recognize a rare combination of surgical skill, compassion, and quiet leadership. With nearly a decade of experience at Charleston Area Medical Center and specialized training from the University of Michigan, Dr. Kloostra has devoted his life to cleft and craniofacial surgery—restoring both function and confidence in his patients.
But his impact doesn’t stop at the operating table.
Joining the Mission to Change Lives
Dr. Kloostra joined Dr. Khurram Khan on a recent international mission trip to Karachi, Pakistan. For Dr. Khan, this wasn’t just a professional collaboration—it was a full-circle moment. Dr. Kloostra had been his mentor during his fellowship in cleft and craniofacial surgery, guiding him through the most intricate aspects of this delicate specialty. To now work side by side in a new setting, offering life-changing care to underserved children, was deeply meaningful for them both.
During the mission, Dr. Kloostra performed complex surgeries, mentored residents, and helped establish systems that will support future missions. His presence was more than clinical—it brought stability, insight, and a shared vision for sustainable care.
A Leader On and Off the Field
After the trip, Dr. Kloostra joined the Smiles Unite Us Board of Directors, lending his experience and leadership to the nonprofit’s long-term vision. His involvement is helping shape everything from surgical protocols to strategic planning, and his commitment continues to inspire the entire team.
Whether he’s mentoring young surgeons, collaborating with international teams, or simply listening to the stories of families we serve, Dr. Kloostra represents the heart of what Smiles Unite Us is all about.
We’re honored to have Dr. Kloostra not just as a board member, but as a mentor, teammate, and champion of our mission. His dedication reminds us that healing is not only about surgery—it’s about human connection, shared purpose, and the belief that every child deserves a chance to smile.
